FerroSorp® – An Advanced Solution for Hydrogen Sulfide Emissions Treatment

Get a Quote

The industrial sector is characterized by the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S)—a corrosive and toxic gas that is one of the main causes of odor nuisances and public complaints.

Key sources of H₂S emissions include waste transfer and sorting facilities, wastewater and biogas treatment plants, the food industry, and rendering plants. To meet strict regulatory requirements and environmental standards for H₂S treatment, the most efficient and cost-effective solution is the use of FerroSorp®.

FerroSorp® – An Advanced Solution for Hydrogen Sulfide Emissions Treatment

The industrial sector is characterized by the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S)—a corrosive and toxic gas that is one of the main causes of odor nuisances and public complaints.

To meet strict regulatory requirements and environmental standards for H₂S treatment, the most efficient and cost-effective solution is the use of FerroSorp®.

What is FerroSorp®?

FerroSorp® is a specialized hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) adsorbent based on iron hydroxide, manufactured in Germany for over 20 years by HeGo BIOTEC and its partners. With proven performance and exceptional efficiency, FerroSorp® has become the preferred solution in the industry for H₂S and odor control, with its global adoption steadily increasing.

Collaboration with Colligo-Tech in Israel

In partnership with HeGo BIOTEC, Colligo-Tech supplies FerroSorp® in Israel, offering comprehensive sales, replacement, and disposal services, tailored to each client’s specific needs.

H₂S Treatment Process Using FerroSorp®

Gases containing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) pass through a dedicated filter filled with FerroSorp® granules. During gas flow, two main chemical reactions take place:

  1. Formation of Iron Sulfide: H₂S reacts with the iron hydroxide in the granules, forming iron sulfide (FeS).
  2. Oxidative Regeneration: The oxygen present in the gas stream or air converts the iron sulfide back into iron hydroxide, while elemental sulfur accumulates within the material’s porous structure.

This process enables highly efficient adsorption and allows for the regenerative reuse of FerroSorp®.

Liquid-Phase Applications for H₂S and Sulfide Neutralization

FerroSorp® can also be used as a liquid-phase adsorbent in a variety of applications for H₂S and sulfide neutralization in water and liquid systems:

  1. Sulfide and H₂S neutralization at the source inside anaerobic reactors and digesters.
  2. Sulfide and H₂S removal in sewer pits, sumps, and pump stations.
  3. Sulfide neutralization using a specialized liquid formulation in wastewater conveyance channels and stormwater drainage systems.

H₂S Adsorption Capacity and Comparison to Activated Carbon

Tests conducted by the German manufacturer on H₂S adsorption have demonstrated that FerroSorp® has a significantly higher H₂S loading capacity compared to both standard activated carbon and specialized H₂S-adsorbing activated carbon:

FerroSorp® adsorption capacityOver 200 kg per cubic meter of material
Specialized H₂S-adsorbing activated carbonUp to ~100 kg per cubic meter of material
Standard activated carbonUp to ~30 kg per cubic meter of material

Available Granule Sizes for Different Applications

  • FerroSorp® S 2 – 4 mm
  • FerroSorp® S 2 – 8 mm
  • FerroSorp® S 5 – 25 mm

Impregnated Activated Carbon: An Advanced Solution for Unique Applications

Activated carbon is a powerful adsorbent tailored for treating a wide range of contaminants. Through the impregnation process, activated carbon can be “upgraded” and customized for specific needs by introducing chemicals or metal particles into its pores. This process chemically modifies the carbon, enhancing its adsorption capacity and enabling more efficient treatment of pollutants that are challenging to remove by other means.
